About Junior Drum Sets

 About Junior Drum Sets

Junior drum sets are referred to by many names. Kids drum sets, kids drums, kids drum kit, junior drums, junior drum kit, and children's drum set to name a few. Regardless of how someone searches for a junior drum set on the internet, they will always end up finding very similar junior drum sets or kids drum sets. Drum sets for kids are basically all the same, although some include a cymbal or cymbals, a drum throne, or even a hi-hat and cymbal stand. The kids drum sets that we carry are all quality junior kits that are extremely affordable for parents. When a child shows an interest in tapping on things, dancing to music, bobbing their head to music, or even requests a set of drums, parents are faced with purchasing something they may know little about. We encourage parents to contact us with any questions they may have. We enjoy providing parents with information that will put them more at ease when shopping for junior drums.

We offer kids drum sets made by TKO Percussion, Union, and Sunlite drums. Both manufacturers make quality junior drum kits at very reasonable prices. We only carry brands that we feel offer excellent quality for an affordable price. You may want to add a different model to your "cart" to compare the shipping charges on each kids drum set. The shipping charges vary depending on the brand, and you may find it more economical to choose one brand over the other because of the shipping charges to your home.

Junior drum kits come in three different sizes or configurations. The first is the 3-piece junior drum set. Although the manufacturers recommend that 3-piece junior drum sets are for ages 3 to 8, we feel that they are most appropriate for ages 3 to 5.

The second is the 5-piece junior drum set. It is the same as the 3-piece junior drum set but includes an extra mounted tom and floor tom. Some also include a hi-hat stand and cymbal stand. The manufacturers also recommend the 5-piece junior drum set for ages 3 to 8. We agree with this recommendation, however if your child is approaching 8 years old, they may be too large to benefit from the traditional 5-piece junior drum set. They are small in design and many children will need a larger drum set as they become 7 to 8 years of age.

The third size is the intermediate size drum set. These drum sets are sized in-between a traditional junior drum set and a full size drum set. Some are also considered jazz drum sets because of the drum sizes. Jazz drummers often play smaller drums for the higher pitch and compact design of the drum set. These drum sets are recommended for drummers who are too large for the traditional junior drum kits but still too small for a full sized drum kit. We recommend them for drummers ages 7 to 12. Again, as a drummer approaches ages 11 or 12 and depending on their size, they may be ready for a full size drum set.

These are the junior drum sets that we carry in the three different size categories:

The 3-piece junior drum set is very basic, compact, and simple. It is made for the young, small, beginning drummer ages 3 to 5. It provides them with real drums to bang on that will stand up to the beating a child can inflict on them. The drumheads can be replaced when they become dented and lose their resonance. Toy drums have drumheads that can’t be replaced. Our kids drum sets are not toys. They are real drums. We offer two junior drum sets in this category:

TKO 99 3-Piece Junior Drum Set

Union UJ3 3-Piece Junior Drum Set

The 5-piece junior drum set is very basic, compact, and simple as well. It is made for the young, small, beginning drummer ages 3 to (7 or 8). It offers them a drum set that resembles a full size drum set but is diminutive in size. The drumheads can be replaced when they become dented and lose their resonance. We offer two junior drum sets in this category:

Union UJ5 5-Piece Junior Drum Set

TKO 101 5-Piece Junior Drum Set

The intermediate size drum sets are made for the preteen drummers ages 8 to 12. The drum sizes are larger and the drum sets are higher quality than the smaller kids drum sets. The bass drum is 20" in diameter compared to only 16" on the traditional junior drum sets. The larger bass drum allows for a "taller" setup for the growing drummer. Many of the junior drum sets in this category are not referred to as "junior drum sets". This is because they can be played by jazz drummers as well as smaller sized drummers. Their quality is equal to a full sized drum set. The drum sizes are simply smaller. If a drum set has a 20" bass drum and a 14" floor tom, it fits into this category. We offer two drum sets in this category:

Sunlite NS-510 5-Piece Drum Set

Union U123 5-Piece Drum Set

All of our junior drum sets are made with basswood shells. Basswood is the most common wood used for entry level drum sets. Even the entry level name brand drums have basswood shells. Basswood is used because it is a lightweight soft hardwood with exceptional stability. Using a more expensive wood (birch or mahogany) for these drums would dramatically increase their cost and is totally unnecessary. Basswood shells offer excellent sound and resonance qualities at an affordable price. Most of us would never notice the difference between the sound of a birch or mahogany shell versus a basswood shell on a junior drum set.

We provide multiple choices of kids drum sets at low prices. It is always a good idea to shop around on the internet for the best price for a kids drum set. We hope that you will return to our site when you are ready to provide a quality junior drum set for your child. We also hope that in a few years parents will return to our site when their child is ready for a full size drum set.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about our kids drum sets!
